Woman in Same-Sex Marriage Unable to Get Divorce
The issue of same-sex marriage has been a hot topic all over the United States in recent years. Laws like Proposition 8 in California are making it difficult for gay or lesbian citizens who have already gotten legally married. The most recent entanglement is over a woman's right to divorce her wife. The problem arises over the couple's residence. Current law says that a divorce can only be granted to a couple who has lived in the given state for over a year. The two women had lived in Florida, but gotten married in Massachusetts- one of only two states where same-sex marriages are accepted.
The organizations claim that the unnecessary detention is forcing children deeper and deeper into the criminal justice system, for no reason. The juvenile facilities in which they are being held lack showers, recreational facilities, sufficiently trained staff and female guards for the female prisoners.
