Mattel Settles Over Lead Poisoning Dispute
In 2007, Mattel yanked several of its toys from store shelves, when it was discovered that they were covered with excessive amounts of lead-based paint. It has been known for years that lead is a poisonous substance, that when ingested, can cause serious damage. Children have a natural proclivity to put things in their mouths and were, therefore, susceptible to disease and injury. Mattel recently settled with 39 states, where the toys were sold. Massachusetts was one of those states, and will receive $625,000. In total, the states received $12 million. The money in Massachusetts will go towards preventing child lead poisoning in the future.
